Lucca
Hotel Locanda l'Elisa is only a few minutes from the historic center of Lucca and it is an ideal starting point to explore this historic city of Roman origins (formerly, according to some sources, of Etruscan origins).
The first feature that will catch your eye are Lucca’s city walls, dating back to the XV-XVII centuries, remained intact despite centuries and today turned into a pedestrian path that allows you to embrace the city of Lucca during a pleasant walk.
The walls of Lucca extend for about 4 km and have been the old city protection for centuries; they are still intact and this not common peculiarity has favored the preservation of Lucca’s downtown which still offers to visitors a large and valuable heritage of churches (Lucca is nicknamed the "City of 100 churches”), medieval and Renaissance palaces, towers and buildings.
The Amphitheatre Square (Piazza dell’Anfiteatro) is one of the most beautiful urban spaces of Italy with its unique elliptical shape, inherited from the former Roman amphitheater. Lucca’s main street is Via Fillungo, the so called "parlor" of Lucca; based on a medieval layout, it is crowded by boutiques and shops that allow you to combine shopping pleasures with the visit to the city.
Worthy of mention is also San Martino Square (Piazza San Martino) where is located Lucca’s Cathedral. This famous landmark was built in Romanesque style and houses the well-known "Holy Face", a venerable relic depicting the Crucifixion of Christ.
The presence of this relic made Lucca a very important pilgrimage station on the way to Rome along the “Via Francigena”.
Dante Alighieri spent several years of his exile in Lucca and in his "Inferno" there are references to several important Lucca families of the fourteenth century. At that time Lucca became so wealthy and influential , thanks mainly to its high quality fabrics production, to move war against Florence.
Lucca is a cultural and artistic jewel of Italian history, ideally located just minutes from the Versilia sea and only forty five minutes from Florence; Pisa is only a short distance away, framed by beautiful Apennines and Apuane Alps.
